Im OK

Family Tree Series

Iā€™m OK, Cottonwood branch, white and black spray paint, 2021

In the second piece of the Family Tree Series, I wished to take a different direction. Rather than stripping the branch bare meticulously, exposing its subsurface identity, I wanted to leave the bark on and attempt to get through to that identity in a different way. I believe that what was missing from the first was the acknowledgment of that surface identity and the scars most of ours bare. I therefore used an ax to carve into the bark messages of help, painting them in white and painting in black a message that said the opposite. This most effectively conveys that damage done is not always visible but will always be there.
