This chair is designed to emphasize how the object is put together and not so much as to what it becomes. By revealing not only how the chair is constructed, but also how the material the chair is made from is constructed, there is a transparency to the design.

The goal for this project was to create a piece of furniture that relies upon the properties of the material in order to function properly. This was to get us to start thinking not of the material as inspiration for the piece but also about the forces applied to a product when in use and how to best design with that in mind. Above is my elevation drawings for the chair.

The chair was built to fit together using only its own dimensions as spacers. The plywood was 3/4 inch thick and I cut the strips to 1 inch. I then used a scrap cut to space the strips in a jig in order to secure.

The whole chair is three panels, following my thesis of simplicity of construction and form for this project.

This project, like many others, evolved the further I got into its design and planning. In the end, this chair has been a huge catalyst piece for a future line of furniture. This furniture, such as this chair, will focus on efficient use of materials (this chair being made out of a single sheet of plywood), and easily be constructed and taken apart to fit modern needs of change.
